Image Lists

The image lists are basically just self-defined thumbnail views. The difference is that in addition, so-called virtual image lists can be generated. That is to say, the images displayed do not necessarily have to reside in the same directory. Changes which are made within an image list always refer to the original image. You can use the [F8] key to toggle the image lists on and off.

The image lists enable you to perform various image operations across several folders. For this purpose you can either create virtual image lists (images from various folders) or directory lists (containing all images of the listed directories). Depending on which method you use, certain functions are deactivated. Image lists can also be accessed via Scripting.

An image list consists essentially of a view window, similar to the thumbnail view. In the upper part you will see a button on the left hand side with which you can create and delete directories, web directories and image lists (virtual directories). Next to this there is a dropdown box which displays the existing directories and image lists. Web directories and virtual image lists are indicated using different colors. Image lists which are based on directories have a white background.

You can fill an image list by using drag&drop to pull images from the thumbnail view into it. If the list is a directory list you will be asked whether the selected images should be copied or moved. It works the other way round as well, but with the difference that you will be asked whether the images should be copied or moved both for directories and for image lists.

Key assignment: [F8]

There are various different kinds of image list:

Directory lists

A directory list corresponds with a directory in the computer's file system and display all the images contained within it. If images are added to a directory list, then they are physically copied or moved to this directory. This type of list is shown with a white background in the selection list.

Web directories

A web directory list shows all images which are to be found in the corresponding directory of an internet web server. If images are added to a web directory, this means that they are copied to the corresponding web server as given in the settings. For reasons of compatibility file names are changed to lower case and spaces and special characters are removed from them. This type of image list supports all the image formats which are recognized by PhotoPerfect. If the directory contains other file types, these are not displayed. This type of list is shown with an  orange background in the selection list.

Virtual image lists

This type of list is, as the name suggests, entirely virtual. This means that images which are added to such a list are not removed from their place of origin. Images cannot be renamed within virtual image lists, as such a process would affect the original files. However, the list can be sorted as required, for instance in order to compile a slide show. Dieser This type of list is shown with a mauve background in the selection list.

The following actions can be accessed using the button in the top left corner:

New directory

This menu item leads to a dialog in which either an existing directory can be selected or a new one can be created. If an image is added to this directory or deleted from it, this does not affect this directory, i.e. deleted images are displayed as a light red box, whereas new images are not displayed.

New web directory

When this item is selected a list opens up showing the directories of one's own web space - providing the respective web space has been entered in Settings. You can create a new directory, use an existing one or delete it. To make sure that it is clear which files, if any, have been deleted, all files are shown here.

Note that in the case of web lists, all the images contained in the directory must first be loaded into the program before the preview images can be created. This type of image list supports all the image formats which are recognized by PhotoPerfect. If the directory contains other file types, these are not displayed.

Note:

In many web spaces the first selectable directory is called 'httpdocs' or 'htdocs'. For some providers  this is also the name of the domain or of another directory (determined by the provider).

New list

Creates a new virtual directory into which images from different folders can be inserted. The inserted images have a different frame color, so that they can be distinguished from those of the thumbnail view. Here, too, it is the case that when an image no longer exists it is displayed in the list with a light red box.

Remove list

The currently displayed list is deleted (on confirmation). Note that only the list is removed, never the images concerned or the selected directory.
