Default Sharpening Question

Ralf Eberle's "Short Course in Sharpening, here

http://www.arcadiasoftware.com/ppfor...newthread&f=22

discusses various methods of sharpening. I am have trouble relating a few of those methods, presumably all available in PP, to the sharpening dialog tabs.

His paragraph on USM sharpening contains two subsections, USM-Y and USM-RGB. Are they the first two tabs from the left on the Sharpening dialog? If so, then where are the 2nd and 3rd items he discusses, Brightening and RGB?

He also mentions, but doesn't demonstrate, local contrast using sharpening. I've been trying a few parameters using USM. My current values for local contrast are

Sharp = 19
Radius = 48
Level = 1

Is there a preferred standard or is local contrast variable from image to image? Ralf mentions that there are other ways to do local contrast within PP but he doesn't elaborate.

No, these 2 options were available in a former version of PhotoPerfect. This is no longer the case.

As I mentioned in the former thread, it is rather a trial and error approach, as there is no universal setting for all images. The value would vary from image to image. However as general rule of thumb: LCE is to be performed exactly like USM, however a much larger radius and a smaller 'Sharp' value are used. But probably you have already found that out.

Best regards

Ralf

Thank you for your response. Your tutorials are very interesting reading.

I am trying to break the habit of over-sharpening and now over-local-contrasting. The images looks great when I finish with them but a day later they suddenly look terribly over-baked. The parameters I used in the first post did create contrast but obliterated detail. This all takes practice.
