Default OOps, Saved in NEF format

I was processing some RAW photos taken with a Nikon D300 in NEF format. I accidentally (read brain went numb) did a "save" in lieu of a "save as" and POOF, my NEF "photo" in the directory turned black and was gone. The "pixel size" at the top left of the thumbnail was set to 0,0 for size! Is this a fatal flaw in allowing a "save" action to a NEF file?? Just wondering.

Hi,

When using "Save" while processing RAW/NEF files, PhotoPerfect will automatically save them as JPEGs. Thus the original RAW/NEF files are untouched. We have also tried this with several different RAW files but could not reproduce the behaviour you described.
Could you please have a look at the original folder via Windows Explorer, if the corresponding NEF file is still there or not. If it is still there, maybe your thumbnail database is damaged. You can just right click in the thumbnail browser and select "create preview images". Another option is going to: File>Options>Service>delete image preview database. After restarting PhotoPerfect, the thumbnails should be recreated again.
If the NEF file is missing, is that possible for you to provide us 1 file, so that we can set up our test environment? Unfortunately we are not in possession of a nikon D300.

Best regards

Hoang-Tran

Hoang-Tran,
First: Using Windows Explorer, the NEF file is still present. If I attempt to open the NEF file with PhotoPerfect it will not open! I then tried opening the NEF using Nikon's NX2. When I attempted to load the NEF I received the following error message: "Cannot load file: C:\users\ken\pictures\2008-09-04\003.nef. Invalid color format, The file format is not supported." So, the NEF file is present but is corrupted! Also, the corrupted files have grown in size from ~15 Megs to over 35 Megs!

I created this condition by:
When using "save" in PhotoPerfect on the D300 NEF, PhotoPerfect stated the file already existed, and asked if I want to overwrite, I said yes and the file subsequently saved. Following the save action the thumbnail turned black! I then followed your instructions to erase the image preview database. I then closed and reopened PhotoPerfect, the thumbnail remained black! I also tried the "create preview images" and it also did not work!

I would be happy to send you some D300 NEFs, but the files are ~ 15 Megs each. If you could send me a mailing address, I would be happy to create a disc and mail it to you to experiment with!

Please advise what you would like to do.

Regards,

Ken

Hi Ken,

Thank you for your message. Unfortunately your mail has still not arrived yet. Maybe web upload?

Thanks in advance.
